Hinter dem Namenskürzel „PdC“ verbirgt sich niemand anderes als der Gründer der Olympischen Bewegung, Pierre de Coubertin, von dem dieses opulente und prächtig gestaltete Buch handelt. Die Autoren Rüdiger Fritz (Halle/Saale) und Volker Kluge (Berlin) hatten jedoch nicht den Ehrgeiz, den zahlreichen Publikationen, die sich mit dem Leben des französischen Barons beschäftigen, eine weitere Interpretation hinzuzufügen. Vielmehr beschränken sie sich im Wesentlichen auf die Olympia-Philatelie, zu der Coubertin ebenfalls auf vielfache Weise beigetragen hat.

Coubertin, dem wir das faszinierende Erlebnis der modernen Olympischen Spiele verdanken, war nicht nur ein Visionär, sondern auch ein begnadeter Netzwerker und PR-Stratege. Zwischen den IOC-Sessionen hielt er den Kontakt zu seinen Mitstreitern mit einer heute kaum noch zu überschauenden Korrespondenz, insbesondere mit Postkarten, die er zumeist mit dem Kürzel „PdC“ unterzeichnete. Das Buch zeigt eine Reihe dieser begehrten und teuren Sammelobjekte, deren Originale sich zumeist im Besitz von Rüdiger Fritz befinden.
Vermutlich war Coubertin zwar selbst kein Olympia-Philatelist, doch das Thema bot sich auch deshalb an, weil es weltweit keine Persönlichkeit gibt – nicht einmal die britische Königin –, die häufiger auf Briefmarken abgebildet wurde wie er. Zwar erschienen die ersten Marken erst nach seinem Tod – 1939 in Haiti –, doch inzwischen sind es 79 Länder, die Briefmarken mit seinem Bildnis editierten.
Das Buch zeigt nicht nur die schönsten und wertvollsten Coubertin-Marken. In ihm sind auch andere, teils erstmals gezeigte philatelistische Produkte und Dokumente versammelt, die von berühmten Athleten, Coubertins Mitstreitern, seiner Zeit und deren Protagonisten erzählen. Und es ist kein leeres Versprechen, dass man in diesem Buch auch viele Details aus Coubertins Leben erfährt, die bisher noch nie öffentlich gemacht wurden.

We do not only owe the fascinating experience of the modern Olympic games to Coubertin, he was also a visionary, brilliant networker and pr-strategist. Between the IOC-sessions Coubertin stayed in contact with his co-workers by writing a huge number of postcards which he usually signed with „PdC“. The book presents a choice of these expensive popular collective objects most of whose originals belong to Rüdiger Fritz.
Probably Coubertin has never been an Olympic philatelist himself. But the topic is especially interesting because there is no other person worldwide, not even the British queen, who was shown on a postage stamp more often than him. Although the first stamps were published only after Coubertin’s death in Haiti in 1939, meanwhile there are 79 countries which edited stamps with his portrait.
The book not only shows the most beautiful and expensive Coubertin stamps. It also assembles, to some extent unpublished, philatelic products and documents which relate to famous athletes, Coubertin’s colleagues as well as his time and their protagonists. And we promise that you will find lots of details about Coubertin’s life which have never been published before.

Derrière les trois lettres « PdC » ne se cache personne d’autre que Pierre de Coubertin, le fondateur du mouvement olympique : c’est à lui qu’est consacré cet important ouvrage, richement illustré et très bien mis en page. Les deux auteurs, Rüdiger Fritz (Halle) et Volker Kluge (Berlin), n’avaient cependant pas l’ambition de publier un ouvrage supplémentaire qui viendrait s’ajouter aux autres livres déjà publiés sur la vie du baron français, et en une interprétation supplémentaore. En fait, ils se limitent pour l’essentiel à la philatélie olympique, à laquelle Pierre de Coubertin a fortement contribué de nombreuses façons.
De Coubertin, à qui nous devons d’avoir relancé les Jeux Olympiques modernes, n’était pas seulement un visionnaire, mais aussi une personne douée dans la mise en valeur de ses réseaux personnels et un stratège doué en relations publiques. Entre les sessions successives du Comité International Olympique (CIO), le baron gardait le contact avec ses amis du mouvement olympique en leur écrivant de nombreux courriers – dont nous n’en avons même pas encore vu la totalité à ce jour -, notamment au moyen de cartes postales qu’il signait souvent simplement par « PdC ». Le livre montre toute une série de tels documents rares et chers, et dont les originaux se trouvent pour la plupart dans la collection de Rüdiger Fritz.
Pierre de Coubertin n’était probablement pas lui-même un collectionneur olympique. Mais le thème du livre s’avère aussi intéressant dans la mesure où aucune autre personnalité importante – même pas la Reine d’Angleterre – ne figure sur autant de timbres-poste émis dans le monde. Même si les premiers timbres-poste émis en son honneur n’ont été émis qu’après sa mort – en 1939 à Haiti -, on compte aujourd’hui 79 pays qui ont mis en vente de timbres sur lesquels figure son portrait.
Le livre ne montre pas seulement les plus beaux et les plus rares timbres-poste représentant Pierre de Coubertin, mais aussi un grand nombre de documents postaux et philatéliques, en partie reproduits pour la première fois, de célèbres athlètes et d’amis de Coubertin, qui témoignent de cette époque et de ses protagonistes. Ce n’est pas une affirmation gratuite que de dire que cet ouvrage donne au lecteur aussi beaucoup de détails sur la vie de Pierre de Coubertin, dont certains sont publiés pour la première fois dans ce livre.

Dietrola sigla „PDC“ non sta altro che il fondatore del movimento olimpico, Pierre de Coubertin, di cui tratta questo opulento e magnifico libro. Gli autori Rüdiger Fritz (Halle / Saale) e Volker Kluge (Berlino) delle tante pubblicazioni che trattano la vita del barone francese, non hanno aggiunto l’ambizione di un’altra interpretazione. Piuttosto, si sono essenzialmente limitati alla filatelia olimpica, alla quale Coubertin ha contribuito in molti modi.
Coubertin, al quale si deve l’affascinante evento dei Giochi Olimpici moderni, non era solo un visionario, ma anche un networker di talento e stratega nella PR. Tra le sessioni del CIO teneva il contatto con i suoi colleghi con corrispondenza, in particolare con cartoline di solito firmato con le iniziali „PDC“, che ormai è quasi impossibile avere una visione generale. Il libro mostra una serie di ambiti e costosi elementi di questa collezione, di cui gli originali in gran parte di proprietà di Rüdiger Fritz.
Probabilmente Coubertin, anche se non filatelista olimpico, ma il tema si è presentato anche perché nel mondo non esiste una personalità – nemmeno la regina d’Inghilterra – che è raffigurato più volte su francobolli come lui. Anche se i primi francobolli apparivano solo dopo la sua morte – nel 1939 ad Haiti – ma ora ci sono 79 paesi, che hanno emesso francobolli con il suo ritratto.
Il libronon solo mostra i più belli e preziosi francobolli di Coubertin. Sono raccolti altri documenti e prodotti filatelici anche per la prima volta mostrati, che raccontano di atleti famosi, colleghi di Coubertin, di suo tempo e i loro protagonisti. E non è una promessa vuota che questo libro ci insegna, molti dettagli della vita di Coubertin che non sono mai stati resi pubblici.
